Zoya Akhtar reveals how The Archies happened by chance as she was set to adapt another comic

Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s upcoming film The Archies has been in the news from the day it was announced due to more than one reason. The film is the adaptation of the Archie comics and that too in an Anglo-Indian community setting of the 1960s. It stars a list of newcomers and star kids including, Agastya Nanda, Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Mihir Ahuja, Yuvraj Menda, Vedang Raina and Dot.

Interestingly, the film happened in an unusual way as Zoya was all set to adapt another comic. She narrated the tale behind the film in an interview with Vogue magazine saying, “I had a meeting with Sharad Devarajan, co-founder of Graphic India, who contacted me because he wanted me to adapt another comic. While we were speaking, I happened to tell him that I’m a huge fan of the Archie comics. He said, ‘Oh, it’s ours and we just leased it to Netflix.’”

After hearing this, Zoya felt that the chance of adapting the Archie comics is gone. But she was in for a pleasant surprise. “In my head, it (the project) was gone since it had been handed over to a streaming platform. The next thing you know, he spoke with Netflix, and they contacted me to ask if I would like to make the film,” said Zoya.

The Archies is all set to premiere on Netflix from December 7 onwards.
