Diljit Dosanjh opens up about how he ‘became distant’ from his family; says, “I was eleven years old when I left my home”

Diljit Dosanjh, who is currently riding high on the success of his music and film career, is all set to bring forth the story of the young musician Amar Singh Chamkila, who became one of the biggest singers in Punjab with music that resonates with everyone. As his film releases on Netflix, Diljit traced his own journey to stardom and recalled moving away from his parents at a pre-teen age and how they eventually became distant.

In an interaction with Ranveer Allahabadia, Diljit Dosanjh revealed that his parents had sent him to live with a relative at a very young age without as much as informing him about the decision. He said, “I was eleven years old when I left my home and started living with my mamaji (maternal uncle). I came to the city leaving my village behind. I shifted to Ludhiana. He said ‘Send him to the city with me’ and my parents said ‘Yes, take him.’ My parents did not even ask me.”

He further revealed that in a bid to save money, he would refrain from contacting them which eventually created distance between them. “I used to stay alone in a small room. I used to just go to school and come back, there wasn’t any TV. I had a lot of time. Also, we didn’t have mobile phones back then, even if I had to call home or receive a call from my parents, it cost us money. So, I started becoming distant from my family.”

However, he went on to appreciate his parents and maintained that they are good people. “I respect my mother a lot. My father is a very sweet person. He did not ask me anything. He did not even ask which school I studied. But my connection with them broke. Not just with them, with everyone,” he shared.

Diljit Dosanjh recently won hearts as a custom officer in the recently released Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon starrer Crew. The actor-singer also became the first Indian to perform at Coachella this year. As for his next, Amar Singh Chamkila, also starring Parineeti Chopra, premieres on Netflix on April 12.
