Yodha Ahmedabad press conference: Karan Johar disagrees with the belief that action films tend to open well: “No genre guarantees you an opening; we are in challenging times when it comes to theatrical business”

The team of Yodha, comprising of actors Sidharth Malhotra, Disha Patani and Raashii Khanna, director duo Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha, producers Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Shashank Khaitan and Manish Menghani and distributor Anil Thadani launched the trailer of the film at a multiplex in Ahmedabad. Karan Johar was asked if action films guarantee a good opening and the filmmaker gave an interesting answer.

Karan Johar said, “No genre guarantees you an opening. We are in very challenging times when it comes to theatrical business. I feel a good film gets sensed by an audience. They are truly empowered with an instinct where they know that a film is good. They sniff it out and they’ll come and see it. You can make an action film, thriller, horror or a love story, none of that guarantees an opening. A good film will always find an audience. And the audience somehow always knows best. Consumers have truly proved themselves to be kings. We are but humble service providers who want audience to love our work. So, when you say action guarantees an opening, no it doesn’t. Nothing guarantees an opening but a good film. We hope the audience gives it love that it truly deserves.”

He was also asked what constitutes a good action film. KJo replied, “Action has to be motivated by emotion. Brain dead action will never land if it doesn’t have its root in an emotion. I always believe that whether you are an action lover or not, if you are motivated by emotional energy, you’ll definitely embrace action. It’s simple. Action has to equal emotion and has to be motivated by emotion.”
