Swara Bhasker condemns assault on Kangana Ranaut; highlights broader issues in India: “Kangana just got slapped, people have lost their lives”

In a recent interview with Connect Cine, actor Swara Bhasker expressed her disapproval of the assault on actor-politician Kangana Ranaut at the Chandigarh airport. The incident involved a CISF constable slapping Ranaut, which Bhasker condemned as unequivocally wrong.

Swara Bhasker REACTS to Kangana Ranaut’s slap incident
Swara stated, “Anybody who is a reasonable person will say that whatever happened with Kangana was wrong… There is nobody who will justify the violence or an act of assault which Kangana suffered. So yes, what happened to her was wrong and shouldn’t have happened. It is not right to assault anyone.”
Swara Bhasker speaks about the bigger picture
However, Bhasker spoke about the need to focus on larger issues facing the country. She pointed out that while the incident with Ranaut was unfortunate, it pales in comparison to the violent realities many people face daily in India. Bhasker remarked, “Kangana just got slapped–and even that should not have happened–but at least she is alive, and has her security around. In this country, people have lost their lives, they’ve been lynched to death, shot dead in a train by a security personnel, in riots, security personnel have been recorded beating up people.”
Why was Kangana Ranaut slapped at Chandigarh airport?
The altercation occurred days after Kangana Ranaut won the Lok Sabha election in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, running under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. Ranaut was on her way to New Delhi for a National Democratic Alliance meeting when the incident took place. She alleged that CISF constable Kulwinder Kaur assaulted her due to her recent remarks on Khalistan. An FIR was subsequently filed against the constable.
Swara Bhasker’s call for consistency
Bhasker also highlighted the hypocrisy of those who justify violence in various contexts but object to the assault on Ranaut. She said, “Jo log ye saare acts ko justify kar rahe hai, woh phir aake Kangana ke case pe hume mat sikhao. (Anyone who justifies these acts should not feel offended in Kangana’s case).”
