Sujoy Ghosh reveals Taapsee Pannu’s role in initiating Badla: “The film actually happened because of Taapsee”

Throughout her career, Taapsee Pannu has chosen roles that challenge the status quo, establishing herself as a versatile actress in the Indian film industry. In a recent conversation, Sujoy Ghosh, the director of Badla, revealed that the film was initiated by Taapsee herself, as she approached him with the script.

In a recent interview Sujoy Ghosh opened up about Badla and said, “Badla actually happened because of Taapsee, she first came to me with that script and I said no no nahi karna hein (we are not doing it). Then Akshai and Sunir [Producers] came to me with the same thing and were saying they are changing it,” Sujoy revealed. Taapsee’s determination and belief in the project were instrumental in bringing it to life, and Sujoy further elaborated on the conditions he set before agreeing to take on the film, quoting, “So I had one request on the thing, that Amitabh ji and I will rewrite the script. Toh jab yeh do mil gaya toh mein ne kiya (when this condition was met, we did the film).”

Released in 2019, Badla is a thriller where Taapsee Pannu plays Naina Sethi, a businesswoman accused of murdering her lover. Her portrayal of Naina presents the character’s complexity and inner conflict.

It effectively communicates how Taapsee Pannu, through her choice of roles, challenges norms and redefines her place as a leading actress in contemporary cinema. The examples of her roles in Manmarziyaan and Pink further illustrate this point.
