This year has seen the release of a number of films of different subjects with both big stars and newcomers. Out of these, some have worked, and some haven’t. But one genre that has proved to be 100% successful is horror. We have seen three such films in this year – Shaitaan, Munjya and Stree 2 – and all of them have worked wonders at the box office.
Released in the first quarter of the year in March, Shaitaan took the box office by storm. Starring Ajay Devgn, R Madhvan, Janki Bodiwala and Jyothika, the makers didn’t go overboard with marketing and promotions. Yet, it ended its box office journey at Rs. 149.49 crores. It is currently the third highest grosser of 2024.
But the biggest surprise of 2024 came in June this year with the arrival of Aditya Sarpotdar’s Munjya. The film’s lead actor was a newcomer Abhay Verma with Sharvari as a supporting actress. The second most prominent character in the film was the monster made through CGI. But the film not only was a success, but it also reached the three-figure mark by finishing at Rs. 107.48 crores.
The latest Bollywood release Stree 2 has managed unbelievable numbers at the ticket window in just a little over a day. The film’s opening day number, including paid previews, is a staggering Rs. 64.80 crores! Starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead, the film was riding high on the franchise’s popularity. Following its stellar opening the business of Street 2 held steady on its second day with over Rs. 30 cr coming in. With its entry into the coveted Rs. 100 cr club in just 2 days, Stree 2 looks set to enjoy a money spinning opening weekend.
The three aforementioned films also figure in the top 10 highest grossers of 2024 with Shaitaan at number three, Munjya at five and Stree 2 already at 10 after just one day.
What is further interesting is that two of the three films – Munjya and Stree 2 – are products of Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films.
