REVEALED: A sound recordist cut off electricity in a studio after Mohit Suri expressed his inability to tell a veteran singer that he was not fit for a song

Acclaimed filmmaker Mohit Suri gave an interesting, in-depth interview to Tarsame Mittal of The Music Podcast wherein he spoke about his musical journey. He also ended up sharing some fascinating trivia.

During the conversation, Mohit Suri was asked about an embarrassing moment in his career. The director laughed and then narrated, “A senior singer was once singing a song for my film. We were recording it in (a studio named) Krishna Audio. Mid-way, we realized that this singer is not fit to sing this particular song! I can’t mention who this singer is as it’s not fair (laughs)!”

He added, “We were quite junior and we told Satish ji, the recordist, ‘Yeh galat choice ho gaya. Ab kya karein?’. He heard us and said, ‘Main kuch karta hoon’. We thought he’d suggest something.”

Mohit raised laughs as he said, “15 minutes later, the electricity got cut. I was shocked, wondering how it happened. Then I realized ki Satish ji ne hi kiya tha so that we can halt the recording!”

He explained, “Those days were different. If a senior singer has sung the song, you can’t replace his voice with that of another singer, as it happens nowadays. Today, you can even inform the singer that his voice is not appropriate for the song.”

At another point, he was asked about his upcoming film. Mohit Suri said, “I am doing a film for YRF (Yash Raj Films). It’s a love story featuring newcomers. I am doing a love story after years. It’s not a romcom. It’s a typical ‘angst Mohit Suri film’.” When asked when it’ll be released, he said that it’ll be out next year. Ahaan Panday is all set to debut with this film.

Mohit Suri also talked highly of Emraan Hashmi, with whom he has worked the most, “It’s often said that Emraan’s films have hit songs. But he has never interfered in the music process. His only request is – if it’s a lip-sync song, it should be sent to him a day before the shoot so that he can lip-sync it well. I have worked with several actors but no one can lip sync better than him. He makes the song better.”
