Ranbir Kapoor recalls wanting to join army or become karate instructor as child: “I had to find my own individualistic path”

At the Red Sea International Film Festival, Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor opened up about his journey in the film industry, the influence of his family’s acting legacy, and the experiences that shaped his artistic pursuits.

Starting Out with Diverse Aspirations
While many assume that Kapoor was destined for the silver screen, he revealed that acting wasn’t his first choice. “When you’re growing up, you have a lot of dreams. I wanted to be a karate instructor or join the army once,” he shared, emphasizing the twists of fate that led him to acting.

Interestingly, Kapoor’s initial ambition was to become a filmmaker. “Before I started acting, I wanted to direct a movie. That’s why I went to film school and learned direction,” he said, recounting his time as an assistant director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. However, destiny had other plans, and acting eventually chose him.
Family Influence on His Career
Speaking about his illustrious lineage, Kapoor candidly admitted that being born into a film family brought unique opportunities but also its own challenges. “I come from a privileged background. The opportunities were always there for me to try my hand at something in cinema. But I had to find my own individualistic path,” he explained.

While his father, the legendary Rishi Kapoor, supported him, there were moments of conflict. “He always thought my choices were too independent, for a certain kind of audience,” Kapoor said, adding that his father wanted him to choose films with broader appeal. However, Ranbir firmly believed in carving his own journey.
The Importance of Life Experiences
Kapoor explained the significance of soaking in life’s experiences to grow as an artist. “If you want to be a part of the movies, it’s important to experience life. Travel, read books, watch movies, go through heartbreak—every emotion adds depth to your craft,” he said.
