Rajit Kapur on playing Aurangzeb in the multi-lingual Chhatrapati Sambhaji, “Got to play a negative historical character for the first time”

Veteran actor Rajit Kapur, known for playing Byomkesh Bakshi in the classic Doordarshan television show of the same name, will be playing the character of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the upcoming Marathi movie Chhatrapati Sambhaji, which will also be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English. The film is directed and produced by Rakesh Subesingh Dulgaj. The actor’s first look from the historical is out.

Sharing the reason for casting Kapur in the role, Dulgaj said in a statement, “Aurangzeb was a cruel, shrewd and wicked dictator. Hence, we wanted a dedicated actor for this role. We felt Rajit Kapur can do justice to the character. So, we decided to give him this opportunity.”

Kapur is known for playing a number of real life characters like Mahatma Gandhi, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, former Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, etc. Speaking about his character in Chhatrapati Sambhaji, he said, “I have portrayed different types of characters in my career so far. Through Chhatrapati Sambhaji, I got to play a negative historical character for the first time. I am happy to be an important part of this movie.”

The movie also stars an ensemble cast of Pramod Pawar, Shashank Udapurkar, Dalip Tahil, Mrinal Kulkarni, Mohan Joshi, Bharat Dabholkar, Lokesh Gupte, Bal Dhuri, Deepak Shirke, among others. It is presented by Perfect Plus Entertainment and AJ Media Corp.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji is all set to release in theatres on February 2. Interestingly, filmmaker Digpal Lanjekar’s film on the same personality from Maratha history titled Shivrayancha Chhava will also be releasing in the same month on the 16th. On top of that, Vicky Kaushal will also be playing Chhatrapati Sambhaji in the Hindi movie Chhava.
