Mohit Suri admits that “Recreating Galliyan was my BIGGEST mistake”; also says that a veteran filmmaker asked him to remix Aashiqui’s ‘Dheere Dheere Se’ for Aashiqui 2

Acclaimed filmmaker Mohit Suri gave an interesting, in-depth interview to Tarsame Mittal of The Music Podcast wherein he spoke about his musical journey. He also ended up sharing some fascinating trivia.

Mohit Suri was asked about his views on remixes and recreation of songs. He said, “I have done only one recreation in my life, that too of my own song. That song was ‘Galliyan’. And it was my biggest mistake. I am not against recreations. I love recreations. But it’s just that mujhe khud ki film ka movement purana lagta hai. I’ll judge myself.” While the original ‘Galliyan’ was a part of Ek Villain (2014), ‘Galliyan Returns’ featured in Ek Villain Returns (2022).

He explained, “For example, my friend Tushar Hiranandani incorporated ‘Papa Kehte Hai’ so beautifully in Srikanth. I feel that if you recreate a song, it should be so good that no one should go back and listen to the original version. He/she should remember the moment where the recreated song is used in the film.”

Mohit Suri also revealed, “When I was making Aashiqui 2, a senior filmmaker, who I respect a lot for his music sense, called me. This was after Murder 2 (2011) had been released. He was the first person who recognized that I have a music sense. When this filmmaker learned that I was making Aashiqui 2, he said ‘You have to recreate Aashiqui’s song ‘Dheere Dheere Se’. I asked the reason for it. He replied, ‘Its music is too big’.”

“Then I went and met Aashiqui 2’s lead actors, Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur. Shraddha was not even born when Aashiqui was released! And if you ask Aditya about Aashiqui’s songs, he’ll be like ‘What’s that?’ (imitates Aditya)! I realized that there’s an older generation of people, who might not even see Aashiqui 2, woh log usme (old songs of Aashiqui) atke hue hai. But I wanted to make music for today’s youth. That’s where a song like ‘Tum Hi Ho’ came into being.”
