Despite a lukewarm opening, Kabir Khan’s biographical sports drama Chandu Champion seems to be finding its footing thanks to strong word-of-mouth. The film, which stars Kartik Aaryan in the lead role, chronicles the inspiring true story of India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. While Aaryan’s opening box office figures were his lowest in almost a decade, positive reviews and audience reactions have led to a resurgence in ticket sales.
Adding to the film’s growing momentum is veteran actress Shabana Azmi’s glowing praise. Taking to Instagram, Azmi lauded both the film and Aaryan’s performance. She described herself as “deeply moved” by “Chandu Champion” and commended Aaryan’s ability to capture the protagonist’s unwavering determination with an infectious smile that avoided any sense of arrogance. Kartik got a sweet kiss from Azmi. In the caption, she wrote, “Vijay Raaz as the coach is very effective. It’s a real-life story and I say Salaam Kabir for making it in his lifetime so he got to watch it with his family. Here am I with Kaartik at a special screening organised by Excel Entertainment,” the five-time National Award-winning actor added.
Resharing the post to his IG feed, Aaryan noted, “Mujhe Meri Eidi Mil Gayi (I received my Eid) Every word you said feels like a medal for me.”

Directed by Kabir Khan and jointly produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Kabir Khan, Chandu Champion released on June 14, 2024.
