Kalki 2898 AD trailer: Prabhas indirectly hints at his box office prowess with the dialogue on ‘records’; Deepika Padukone’s character adds to the mystery; Amitabh Bachchan’s action avatar steals the show

The trailer of one of the most awaited films of the year – Kalki 2898 AD – is finally out. Bollywood Hungama got a sneak peek at the promo a few hours before and it’s clear that this is a film for the big screen.

The trailer is a bit lengthy and gives an idea about the world and the nature of the characters (it is advisable to see the 30-minute animated prelude Bujji & Bhairava before catching the trailer or the film). Yet, it still keeps the plot under wraps. This is especially with regards to Deepika Padukone’s character – who is the child that she is carrying in her womb?

Prabhas has a late entry in the trailer and his entry scene is a bit thanda. But he makes up for it with his character’s care-a-damn attitude. Also, his dialogue on records is meant to induce claps and excite his fans as parallels can be drawn with his box office track record. It is more on the lines of Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic dialogue of Jawan, ‘Bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar’, wherein the real-life aspect is smartly infused into a one-liner, which makes it newsworthy.

Amitabh Bachchan, meanwhile, is the surprise of the trailer. In one shot, he lifts up several baddies and Big B looks terrific in this avatar. Lastly, Kamal Haasan appears in just one scene, and he rocks the show, as expected. Disha Patani, too, has just one shot but she leaves a mark. After Yodha, this is yet another action role for her and it suits her well.

Any shortcomings? Besides Prabhas’ laidback entry, the trailer could have had more moments of high. The VFX, no doubt, is top-class and the hard work of the makers can be seen clearly. But this coupled with some more whistle-worthy moments would have taken the impact to another level.

Nevertheless, Kalki 2898 AD trailer definitely catches attention and it’ll hopefully lead to a healthy opening in all languages when it releases on June 27. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the futuristic sci-fi flick is backed by Vyjayanthi Movies.
