Jimmy Shergill recalls cutting his hair as a Sikh teenager; says, “You are a kid, you make mistakes”

Actor Jimmy Shergill, known for his boyish charm in early films like Mohabbatein, has carved a diverse career by rejecting typecasting and embracing challenging roles. In a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble, Shergill delved into his artistic choices, a past family conflict, and his upcoming project with Neeraj Pandey.

Despite achieving success with “chocolate boy” roles, Shergill felt the need to explore his range. “Everyone would say ‘why not?’ This is amazing,” he recalled about the initial push to capitalize on his charm. However, an inner voice warned him against getting stuck in a limited image. He returned signing amounts to pursue varied projects, eventually landing films like Munna Bhai MBBS, Haasil, and Yahaan that showcased his versatility.

Shergill, born Jasjit Singh Gill and a Sikh by faith, also opened up about a sensitive chapter in his life. At 18, he chose to cut his hair, a decision that led to a year and a half of strained relations with his family. He said, “You are a kid, you make mistakes, even I made a few mistakes. Someone brought it up and it went on a little too far.”

Reflecting on his career path, Shergill acknowledges the element of chance. “Maybe it was destiny, and it works more than your plans. At that time, I could not even think that I would land in this industry but maybe it was written. You call it a mistake, an incident, or an accident, things happened, and I landed here,” he said. 

Shergill is now gearing up for his next project, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, directed by the acclaimed Neeraj Pandey. This venture marks a reunion with the filmmaker after they collaborated in Yahaan.
