IF director John Krasinski had his set of Imaginary Friends while growing up: “I had to hide in my neighbor’s bushes to escape”

We’ve all had an imaginary friend or two while growing up. And while we don’t think much of it today, it doesn’t mean these imaginary friends didn’t have a big impact – for better and worse. John Krasinski, the writer and director of Imaginary Friends (IF), too, admits to having had several imaginary friends of his own as well as a couple of enemies.

John says, “I did have a wild imagination. Our home was very close to a video store, and I was allowed to walk there by myself at night. It would take me a half hour to get home, because I would pretend that all these different creatures were after me and I had to hide in my neighbor’s bushes to escape.”

Krasinski began to see IFs not simply as playmates. He added, “They are created in the moment that you had the biggest dreams. They could be the version of you that you dreamed of becoming. What if they never really went away? What if they’re always standing behind you and all you have to do one day is look back and see them and it all comes flooding back to you?”

Directed by John Krasinski, Imaginary Friends (IF) stars Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw with voices from Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. alongside many more as the wonderfully unique characters that reflect the incredible power of a child’s imagination.

Don’t miss your chance to be transported back to your childhood with Imaginary Friends, arriving in theaters on May 17.
