In a candid conversation with fans during a recent Bollywood Hungama event, acclaimed actor Vijay Sethupathi spoke about his 2019 film Super Deluxe. Readers may recall that Super Deluxe was not selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars despite making it to the shortlist, which had sparked a debate online. Addressing the same concerns, Vijay gave a firm answer yet refrained himself from talking much about it.
While agreeing that it was “heartbreaking” for him and the team of Super Deluxe, Vijay did not delve deeper into the topic. However, he instantly stated that the reason Super Deluxe did not become India’s official entry was “politics.” He explained, “We know that something happened.”
The Farzi actor continued and added, “It’s not because I was in that film. Even if I am not in that film, I want that film should go there. Something happened in between and I don’t want to talk about that. It’s unnecessary.”
For the unversed, Super Deluxe, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, was a bold and unconventional film. It garnered critical acclaim for its performances, storytelling, and fearless tackling of sensitive themes. The film’s inclusion in the shortlist for India’s Oscar entry had initially sparked excitement and anticipation, but its ultimate snub left many fans disappointed.
Coming back to his professional front, he is currently promoting his next film, Merry Christmas. It is slated to release on January 12. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, it also stars Katrina Kaif. The film is an adaptation of a novel.
