EXCLUSIVE: Sudipto Sen on Bastar: The Naxal Story, “I strongly believe that we have been largely successful in this endeavour”

Bastar: The Naxal Story, produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s Sunshine Pictures and co-produced by Aashin A. Shah, is directed by Sudipto Sen and stars Adah Sharma. The movie has started streaming recently on Zee5. It stars Adah Sharma in the lead. As per the title, the film is based on the Naxalite issue in Chattisgarh’s Bastar.

In an exclusive quote with us, Sudipto Sen, speaking about his working style, said, “My cinematic style is that I trust the art and artistic expressions of my actors. Not only actors, but I also trust my technicians. I brief them, explain them, and take them on a journey through the history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology of the subject. At a point in time, they cry, laugh, and behave as my characters in the story, and then I take them physically to the location and introduce them to the real-life heroes on ground zero. There’s no more me alone. I keep trusting them till the end. If they fail in between or are hesitant, then only I can interfere. I am blessed. I have worked with actors like Adah, Indira, Vijay, Subrarta, and Kishore Ji; they are magical.”

Speaking on what they have achieved with Bastar, Sen added, “I strongly believe that we have been largely successful in this endeavour. The security forces working in the treacherous landscape of Bastar, risking their lives, were so emotional after seeing my film that I was overwhelmed. For them, they could never have imagined that an Indian film could be so sensitively made, revolving around strong emotions while simultaneously motivating a large section of people towards the cause of humanity and deshprem. The Chhattisgarh police invited us to Raipur and Jagdalpur for an official guard of honor. I think this is the true measure of success for my film.”

Bastar was the next film from the trio of director Sudipto Sen, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah and actress Adah Sharma after the surprise blockbuster The Kerala Story.
