EXCLUSIVE: Madhu Chopra regrets some steps she took for Priyanka Chopra Jonas; says, “I put her in a boarding school without my husband’s approval”

Dr. Madhu Chopra, who is now one of the closest persons to Priyanka Chopra Jonas, traced her long journey with her daughter and discussed candidly with Bollywood Hungama about her changing relationship with the actress. In the interview, she confessed that Priyanka Chopra was always closer to her father and at one instance, she doubted her parenting skills so much that she ended up sending her to a boarding school.

For the unversed, Dr. Madhu Chopra worked in the army along with her husband Ashok Chopra, and the two of them stayed away for quite some time in the formative years after the actress was born. In the interview, Madhu Chopra confessed that she didn’t spend much time with her because she spent her a good share of teenage years abroad and later when she arrived in India, she was busy with her studies. Furthermore, Madhu was living with her own mother and mother-in-law, so she had enough support but regrets that she couldn’t spend as much time with her daughter. “She was closer to her father,” Madhu told Bollywood Hungama.

In the same breath, she recalled the time when she regretted certain decisions, as the happenings around made her question her own parenthood.  “I often regret the steps I took. She was four or five years old when she snapped at her father. I realised that these were the same words I’d use on her, and it made me doubt my parenting. Perhaps I wasn’t doing the right things. And when she was seven, I put her in a boarding school without my husband’s approval, without my family’s approval. I didn’t counsel Priyanka either. Those four years were very tough… But neither of my children have accused me of abandoning them yet,” she said.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas currently shuttles between India and US, and is married to American pop star Nick Jonas. The couple also have a daughter named Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, born via surrogacy.
