Actress Chhaya Kadam recently got acclaim for her role in Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies. She is now seen in this week’s release Madgaon Express, in which she is also getting praised for her quirky character Kanchan Kombdi. During an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama, she revealed that it was her film Kaun Pravin Tambe? that played a major role in she getting cast in Madgaon Express.
“Kunal Kemmu (director) was watching the film Kaun Pravin Tambe? He saw me standing behind Shreyas Talpade in one scene. As soon as he saw me, without me even uttering a dialogue, he said that she is our Kanchan Kombdi. He called Shreyas and asked about me. He then realized that he had seen me in Andhadhun where I was so different. He then remembered seeing me in Gangubai (Kathiawadi) too. So, he decided that I will play Kanchan Kombdi,” she said.
While Laapataa Ladies had some important social messages, Kadam said that Madgaon Express isn’t that type of a film. “There is no social message or anything. Just come, laugh and have a blast. We need such films too,” she said.
During the narration itself, Kadam was amazed by Kunal Kemmu’s conviction. “The way he narrates, you can see the whole film in front of your eyes,” she said. “He was showing every character perfectly. He also spoke about how the camera will go and where drones will be used. In all these years, I have never heard such a reading. He had come with so much homework.”
Chhaya Kadam is a known name in Marathi cinema and is now seen in different types of characters in Bollywood too. When asked about her criteria for choosing films, she said, “There is not much. It’s all about how I find it and whether I like it. And whether I will get to do anything different.”
Madgaon Express also stars Pratik Gandhi, Divyenndu, Avinash Tiwary and Nora Fatehi. The film, which is produced under the banner of Excel Entertainment, has released in theatres today on March 22.
