Eijaz Khan shares his experience of dubbing for Vijay Sethupathi after playing his brother in Jawan; says, “I feel that my voice complements Vijay sir as well”

For actor Eijaz Khan, it was an unforgettable moment when he learned he would be dubbing for the versatile Vijay Sethupathi in the blockbuster Maharaja. Eijaz, who has also been exloring dubbing along with acting, interestingly has also shared screen space with Vijay in one of the biggest blockbusters – Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role along with an ensemble cast. The actor couldn’t have been more excited about this opportunity and mentioned how knowing him in person helped him through the dubbing process.

He said, “I consider myself fortunate to have had the chance to study every scene he performed. Repeatedly analysing why he delivered his lines the way he did was important. I’ve micro-dissected every subtle movement—the glint in his eyes, the flick of an eyelid, even the way he modulates his voice. Understanding all the nuances of his performance has been an incredible learning experience. It’s difficult to put that into words.”

He went on to state how he feels he is a good choice to dub for Vijay Sethupathi as he added, “I feel that my voice complements Vijay sir as well. I have a deep voice, and his personality also has a charm, so it aligns. However, I made a conscious effort to ensure that my voice sounds as vulnerable as possible in Maharaja. People who have seen the film will understand where that vulnerability stems from and why it’s so essential to the character. Vijay sir’s role in the film is that of a very intelligent character—everything he does is calculated and purposeful, so I had to ensure that came through in the dubbing.”

Reflecting on their time together on the sets of the Atlee film, Eijaz shared, “I met him during the filming of Jawan. Once, while we were shooting at the gym, he asked me about my workout regimen and how challenging it is to maintain such a physique. I remember him telling me, ‘I eat whatever makes me happy because otherwise, it will reflect in my work.’ It was such a profound statement and something I’ve thought about ever since.”

Dubbing for Maharaja isn’t his first experience. In fact, the popular City of Dreams actor has been doing this for almost a year and half for South Indian films. Elaborating on the experience, Eijaz, “I’ve lent my voice for the Hindi version of Maharaja with Goldmine Telefilms. To begin with, I must say that I have a very close friend and mentor at Goldmine Telefilms, Mr. Abul. I’ve done almost all my voice acting work with him, and he’s truly my guiding light. When I was offered the opportunity to dub for Maharaja, I thought he wanted me to dub for Anurag Kashyap, but then he said, ‘No, it’s for Vijay sir as Maharaja.’ I was almost in tears because Vijay sir is someone I respect immensely. His range of work is incredible, from Super Deluxe to Maharaja. I’ve seen some of his other productions, which are simple, slice-of-life films. I believe he’s a highly underrated actor. Everything he does on screen is intentional and has meaning, which I learned during the dubbing process.”
