Chandu Champion trailer launch: “I saw nobody than Kartik Aaryan for the role. He has the boyish charm and the son-of-the-soil feeling that Murlilant Petkar has” – Kabir Khan

The trailer of Chandu Champion was held at a cricket stadium in Gwalior, Kartik Aaryan’s hometown. The stadium was filled not just with media but also hundreds of fans who cheered for their local boy.

Director Kabir Khan began by saying, “I often say that aap kahani choose nahin karte, kahani aapko choose kar leti hai. This is a story that really called out to me. Yeh ek inspirational kahani hai jo chhupi padi thi. We didn’t know that this man (Murlikant Petkar) has achieved so much. It’s a tale that everybody in India needs to watch. That was what motivated me and I realized that I had to tell it.”

Kabir further said, “And I honestly saw nobody than Kartik Aaryan in it. He has the boyish charm and the son-of-the-soil feeling that Murlilant Petkar has. That is why, Kartik also said that this is a film I want to take back to my hometown. And here we are (smiles) “

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala got emotional as he said, “I have been making films for 35 years. I often feel that I have reached a stage that the release of my film’s trailer will not affect me. But in the last 5 days, we are in an emotional turmoil, wondering kya hoga. Tears are flowing everyday. And when I see the trailer today, tears come out again. I feel I am still alive as a filmmaker today! I have not reached a saturation point.”

Sajid continued, “The effort that the boys are making, from Mr Amitabh Bachchan saab to Dharam ji (Dharmendra) whom I worked with in the 80s to this superstar (points at Kartik Aaryan), from not eating properly for a year, having one meal a day to not consuming sugar at all (is commendable).”

He added, “The response we are seeing today is all thanks to the efforts of technician like Kabir. And also this actor who’s behind us every hour and pushing us to do better.”

He ended by saying, “I am also grateful to move in the lanes of Gwalior where this boy (Kartik) grew up.”

Chandu Champion releases in cinemas on June 14.
