Box Office 2023 Recap: Salaar is the only South film whose Hindi version turned out to be a success

2023 turned out to be very fruitful for Bollywood. In fact, according to many trade experts, it was one of the best years for the Hindi film industry as the numbers generated by a good number of films were unprecedented. Similarly, the year also saw the release of several South films dubbed in Hindi. In recent years, Hindi versions of South movies have worked wonderfully in the Hindi belts. But the same wasn’t the case in 2023.

Of all the South films released in Hindi, Prabhas starrer Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire was the only one that entered the Rs. 100 Crore Club. The Prashanth Neel directorial has collected Rs. 135.60 crores and the film is still running in theatres. It reached the Rs. 100 crores figure before the start of 2024. It is the highest-grossing Telugu dubbed movie of 2023.

On the other hand, the highest-grossing Tamil dubbed movie of last year was Leo with Rs. 30.18 crores. The highest-grossing Kannada movie in Hindi dubbed version is Underworld Ka Kabzaa and its lifetime earnings are a mere Rs. 3.25 crores!

Interestingly, the total number of collections earned by all South dubbed movies in 2023 is Rs. 176.53 crores. Out of this, Rs. 108.7 crores came from Salaar alone! This data speaks volumes of what the business of South dubbed movies in Hindi was in 2023 if we don’t count Salaar. Apart from Salaar, Leo and Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 are the only films whose Hindi dubbed versions have reached double figures.
