Arbaaz Khan speaks on nepotism in Bollywood: “Family ties open doors, but not guarantee success”

Arbaaz Khan, alongside his brother Sohail Khan, recently weighed in on the ongoing debate about nepotism in Bollywood. The sons of veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, both actors themselves, offered a nuanced perspective on the issue during a recent interview on Timeout With Ankit.

While acknowledging that family ties can provide a foot in the door, Arbaaz stressed that they are not a shortcut to a successful career spanning decades. “Certainly doors will open for you if your father belongs to a certain field, as is the case in any field,” he said, drawing a parallel to other professions.

He elaborated, citing his own experience: “Meeting someone becomes easier if your father is part of the industry, but that doesn’t guarantee work.” Highlighting the importance of talent and audience approval, Arbaaz remarked, “No one does favours for anyone. Even a superstar goes through a phase where films flop. How can they then favour or help another celeb’s kin?”

Sohail echoed his brother’s sentiment, pointing out numerous examples of star kids who haven’t achieved mainstream success. “There are hundreds of sons and brothers who didn’t succeed in the industry,” he said.

The interview also touched upon the career aspirations of the next generation in the Khan family – Arbaaz’s son Arhaan and Sohail’s son Nirvaan.  While both are reportedly interested in pursuing careers in Bollywood, Arbaaz revealed that Nirvaan plans to gain experience by assisting a director before venturing out on his own.

Sohail acknowledged the advantage their family background provides while highlighting the importance of individual merit: “Fortunately, with the platform that we have… I hope he gets a job. Having said that, I feel he should be able to find a job on his own.”
