Adil Hussain regrets acting in Kabir Singh; calls it “misogynistic” and “embarrassing”

Actor Adil Hussain has sparked fresh conversation around Shahid Kapoor’s controversial film Kabir Singh, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. In a recent interview on the YouTube channel AP Podcast, Adil revealed his deep regret for being a part of the movie.

The actor admitted to a critical lapse –  agreeing to star in Kabir Singh without reading the script. He stated, “[Kabir Singh] is the only film in my life that I did without reading the script.” This decision stemmed from time constraints, but upon finally watching the film in theaters, Adil walked out within 20 minutes.

“I regret it till today,” the critically acclaimed actor confessed. He went on to call Kabir Singh “misogynistic” and a film that made him “feel small as a human being.” While acknowledging the director’s right to creative freedom, Adil strongly disagreed with the film’s message. “It legitimizes male misogyny,” he said. “It legitimizes violence… and it glorifies it.”

The 60-year-old actor further explained that he initially declined the role due to scheduling conflicts. The makers later sent him his specific scene, prompting him to request the full script. However, they sent him Arjun Reddy, the Telugu original of Kabir Singh. Unable to find time to watch it, Adil devised a plan to avoid the project. He instructed his manager to ask for an exorbitant fee, assuming the makers would back out. Surprisingly, they agreed.

“I liked the scene I did,” Adil admitted, “So I thought the film would be good too.” However, watching the final product left him feeling “embarrassed.” He even expressed concern about his wife’s potential reaction, stating, “She would be so angry if she sees this.”

Adil also clarified that he hasn’t seen Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s latest film Animal and therefore refrained from commenting on it. In Kabir Singh, Hussain played the role of Shahid Kapoor’s college professor.
